The Boss Who Hated Me

Once upon a time, I had a boss who hated me. I was the faculty yearbook sponsor, and she was the principal--the powerful Mrs. M.
For decades, I had been obsessed with a swirly, Classic Foil design on Kleenex boxes, and I purchased rights to use a similar pattern on the yearbook cover in purple. I just knew Mrs. M. would love it, and I was excited to share the draft.
However, I was totally devastated when she told me I could not use purple. Mrs. M. went on to say I could either use red (her favorite color--judging by her wardrobe) or blue (the school color).
“But,” I explained, “purple is a nice combination of the two.”
I was met with another firm, “No.”
I left her office defeated. “I work my butt off at this school, and I can’t even have a purple yearbook cover,” I huffed. “She truly hates me.”
So, after complaining to a friend and swearing I’d never sponsor another yearbook again (lol), I choose a blue cover.
Shortly after, I left to work overseas in Europe and thought my time with Mrs. M. was over. So, I was totally surprised when, a year later, she asked me to help open a new school and develop an out-of-the-box program for gifted students.
Yes, she had a black-and-white approach to the world, and I was a purple person. But she appreciated me for who I was and ended up being one of the best bosses and most supportive cheerleaders a person could ever have.
What’s more, my Unity Bee design is partly inspired by and dedicated to Mrs. M. Even though we didn’t agree on much, we agreed to disagree. What’s more, we appreciated the gifts that the other brought to the cafeteria table (which I roller skated across once when she wasn’t looking).
The End. (-:
